Benefits of Dual Credit Classes:

• Completion of a vocational degree or certificate in a short time after high school graduation, thus allowing earlier entry into the work force
• Completion of an associate degree and ultimately a bachelor's degree in four years or less due to an early start
• Reduce time period to finish college degree/certificate (enter workforce sooner)
• College credits may apply to CSC degree or certificate
• College credits may be transferred to another college or university (see counselor)
• Less expensive tuition rate at CSC versus any 4-year institution (public or private)
• No additional housing expenses for students while earning dual credit in HS
• Provides more diverse curriculum for HS Juniors & Seniors
• May keep HS Seniors from selecting mid-term graduation if they can earn college credit, remain in HS and still participate in HS sports and activities
• Allows HS students to fulfill many general education requirements and ease their transition into a university setting during their early semesters away from home
• Provides college level course work experience to HS students in a more controlled environment (while living at home)
• Many HS faculty have appropriate credentials to teach dual credit classes (Master's degree in their discipline for transfer courses)
• If HS instructor teaches dual credit class during their base school day, then CSC pays HS for the instruction (financial benefit to school district)
• If HS instructor teaches dual credit class outside of base teaching load (early bird or late afternoon class) then CSC pays instructor directly
• Opportunity for HS instructors to teach dual credit classes may encourage more faculty to earn their master's degree
  

Several dual credit options are available, High School Students May:

• Attend Carl Sandburg College courses offered during the regular school day at their high school
• Attend regular college courses at Carl Sandburg College campuses
• Enroll in Carl Sandburg College courses offered through interactive TV/compressed video at their high school
• Enroll in Carl Sandburg College courses offered on the Internet
• Enroll in Carl Sandburg College courses offered through the high school's area vocational center

College credits earned may be applied to a degree or certificate at Carl Sandburg College or may be transferred to another college or university. Students should contact a Carl Sandburg College counselor to discuss transfer of credit and the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI).

Individual Courses
Students may select from the many transfer or vocational courses offered each semester by Carl Sandburg College on any of the three campuses.

Galesburg Area Vocational Center — (GAVC)
The following program offerings may be available for dual credit through the GAVC.

- Industrial Electricity
- Welding
- Manufacturing Technology
- CISCO Networking Academy

Western Area Career System — (WACS)
The following program offerings may be available for dual credit through the Western Area Career System (WACS).
- Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)
- Cosmetology


To Enroll in Dual Credit Classes, a Student Must:

• Be 16 years of age or order
• Receive written permission from the high school counselor or principal
• Complete Carl Sandburg College's assessment test
• Pay tuition and fees and purchase supplies and required textbooks (unless alternate arrangements are made by the high school)
• Meet all prerequisite and attendance requirements

Steps to Enroll:

• Complete a Carl Sandburg College application form
• Provide the College with a signed "High School Permission Form"
• Complete the Carl Sandburg College assessment exam (contact the Assessment Office at 309-341-5323)
• Complete the Carl Sandburg College registration process

College Credit will be awarded for any high school student who successfully completes in a Carl Sandburg College credit course. College credit will appear on the student's Carl Sandburg College transcript. This will include the grade earned in the course.

High School Credit is optional and is at the discretion of the high school. Students who want to have their final grades sent to their high school must submit a written request to Carl Sandburg College's Registration & Records Office.
